I respect the yaoi fangirls who actually have some sense to their writings or drawings... but most of them don't. The relationships are mostly based on assumptions and stuff, not necessarily via cannon, cause sometimes there is none via cannon. The way to write or make a statement about a relationship between characters that are not original is to make it believable (if it is an assumption), realistic an logical (does not include rape or such things, that just don't happen). Staying true to the characters is also a good way, no matter if it is a gay relationship or straight, it most be true to the characters and realistic... unless is crack (not a 500 page crack please, lol).

Plus there are guys that just won't go with other guys, don't push it (same with female characters, for the Yuri fans). Studying a character before writing about it is good, specially when it's not your own. There's also the flaming part. In the world of writing, no matter what you write, you will get flames, or critics. It would be stopping freedom of expression if you tell the readers not to flame. Not everyone will like what you write. That's how it works.

At least that's the way I think of course. My sole personal opinion.
